About Us: The Story of Kickboxkarate Martial Arts

KBK Martial Arts Kick

Building a Community Through Martial Arts

Kickboxkarate Martial Arts began with a simple idea: to create a space where anyone, regardless of age, ability, or experience, could learn Martial Arts and thrive. Since those early days teaching a small group of students in our dojo, we’ve grown into a thriving academy serving the communities of Dorking, Brockham, and Beare Green.

At Kickboxkarate Martial Arts, we believe Martial Arts is about more than just kicks and punches. It’s about personal growth, building confidence, and learning skills that extend far beyond the mats. Our mission has always been to make these benefits accessible to all levels—whether you’re a child taking your first steps into Martial Arts or an adult looking for a new challenge.

From Humble Beginnings to Thriving Academy

Our journey started with just three kids in our dojo. Not long after, those three brought their entire family to join, and the group continued to grow. Over the years, Kickboxkarate Martial Arts has become a second home for students of all ages, with programs designed to suit everyone—from Mini Dragons to adults and families training together.

What sets us apart is our commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment. For us, it’s not about chasing competition titles (although our students have won many, including World Championships). It’s about helping every individual—whether they’re aiming for a black belt or simply looking to build confidence—become the best version of themselves.

A Club Shaped by Passion and Experience

The foundation of Kickboxkarate Martial Arts is built on decades of passion and experience. Our teaching philosophy is rooted in values like discipline, focus, respect, and perseverance—principles we believe are just as important off the mats as they are on them. These lessons are woven into every class, ensuring our students walk away with skills that last a lifetime.

What Makes Us Different?

What makes us stand out isn’t something I can fully put into words—it’s something you have to experience. While many clubs focus on building polished websites and social media pages, I encourage you to come down, take a free trial, and experience our community for yourself. You’ll find high-energy classes, students excited to learn, and instructors who genuinely care about your progress.

Where It All Began: Meet Sean and Kelly McCarthy

Kickboxkarate Martial Arts wouldn’t exist today without the passion and dedication of its founders, Sean and Kelly McCarthy.

For Sean, Martial Arts has been a lifelong journey. He first stepped onto the mats as a 7-year-old in 1994 and was instantly captivated by the discipline, focus, and camaraderie it offered. Over the years, Sean honed his skills, competing on national and international stages for Team GB, including his memorable win of WAKO Pro World Champion 2009. But it wasn’t the trophies or titles that defined his journey—it was the lessons Martial Arts taught him: to be disciplined, resilient, and the best version of himself.

At 18, Sean decided to give back to the community that shaped him by creating Kickboxkarate Martial Arts. What started with just three students at Ashcombe School has grown into a thriving club that welcomes everyone, from complete beginners to seasoned Martial Artists.

Sean’s wife, Kelly, joined the club as a student in 2010. Inspired by the positive energy and supportive environment, she quickly progressed through the ranks to become an Instructor and represented Team GB alongside Sean in The European Championships 2014. Now, as joint owners of the academy.

Sean and Kelly bring their shared passion to every class, working together to foster a sense of community and help students achieve their goals.

For the McCarthys, Kickboxkarate Martial Arts isn’t just about teaching techniques—it’s about empowering individuals, creating friendships, and building a supportive space where students of all ages and abilities can thrive.
